Pneumonia Isn't Just a Song by Fog

This post is probably half-crazy since I've been up since 3am or so.

Finn had a runny nose yesterday. He sneezed some too but, for the most part, he was fine. At about 2am, he started coughing and wheezing. We were up from 3am until ...well, now pretty much. By 7am, his wheezing was getting pretty bad; rattly and junky. He started throwing up soon after. Erik suggested I call the doctor -- I did, but I didn't think it was that bad.

The nurse called back and asked me when he started coughing and what his chest sounded like. After I explained his breathing, she told me they wanted to see me. By the time I had gotten him to the car, he had thrown up 5 times and was so lethargic it was worrying me. He wouldn't stand, wouldn't lift his head or answers any questions. He threw up at the car, at the clinic (several times) and was totally miserable.

He wouldn't stand to get weighed, laid on the table on his stomach and didn't even move when they poked his finger for blood. By now, I was starting to get worried. And his breathing was so labored! The doctor came in, listened to his breathing, they hooked him up to a machine to check his heart rate n' stuff.

"I'm pretty sure it's pneumonia," the doc tells me.
"pneumonia!! You can get it that quickly?!"
"Yep, we'll do a chest x-ray next."

By the time we were headed downstairs for the x-ray, Erik showed up. Whew, carrying a toddler everywhere is hard work -- even harder when you're carrying a puke bowl, your purse, his blanket and a towel. I didn't have any other choice! They took x-rays and sent us back upstairs with them.

After waiting a bit, they took us back and told us that they were going to try the nebulizer. If that didn't work, they'd admit us to the hospital! Crap! Finn was still pretty lethargic at this point. They put the mask over his face, he didn't even question it. AFter 5 mins or so, the doc came back and checked on this stats. He looked up at the doctor and smiled. What an excellent sign. He started talking soon after that.. asking for water, reminding me that Jacob was also three, and wondering if we could watch some TV? I wanted to hug him so hard.

They let us go home. If he gets worse, we have to take him to the hospital tonight. We have another appointment tomorrow morning. They "let us" buy the nebulizer, we have to use it every four hours. He's finally asleep now. I'm exhausted as well.

Ugh. Isn't it terrile when our little ones are sick? Especially seeing them act so lethargic and just not acting like themselves is the worst!

I hope he feels better very soon! So did they give him some meds besides the nebulizer? Antibiotics? Or doesn't that work for pneumonia?

They gave him two shots of something that starts with an R? We had to wait 20 mins before we could leave to make sure he didn't have a reaction.

I'm so sorry. Pneumonia is awful. My boyfriend had it, and I literally would sit next to him with my hand on his chest making sure he was still breathing. Its the worst. I hope Finn gets better soon.

I'm guessing they gave him a steroid.
