After having a runny nose on Monday, he woke up wheezing this morning. He was doing okay until around 1pm, then started complaining about his mouth hurting. He was vomiting by 2pm. We were in the car going to urgent care by 5pm. Uuuugh.
The doctor was nice and told us:
- If the nebulizer didn't help, we'd have to go to the hospital. It did help. He prescribed us an oral steroid.
- We have an appt with the pediatrician tomorrow morning to discuss the meaning of all this.
- I'm worried it's asthma. The doc said it's possible. He also said it could be something that only happens through the winter then he grows out of it.
- I worry about all these steroids -- nebulizer and oral? He's going to grow a third arm or something.
- I am going to start to worry every time he has a runny nose. Is it going to turn into an attack?
- Erik does not like being covered in vomit. Five times in a row. Weird! Also, I've learned to pack extra clothes in the car for emergencies. Finn rode home in my maternity sweater, no socks or shoes.
To sum up today:
They said they don't diagnose asthma until they are older, but if my doc had to bet, he'd bet Finn will develop asthma. We came up with a "asthma plan" which includes Singulair every day and Pulmicort & Albuterol when he has a cold. And if he gets REALLY bad, they said we'd give him Prednisolone (what they prescribed him last night). He said we'd do the plan through the winter.
I'm hesitant to start Singulair because:
- He's only had two episodes of this (although they were only seven weeks apart...).
- I just read a crapload of scary side effects of Singulair.
- My gut tells me it's an intolerance to dairy -- this is something I've considered for a while due to his eczema. I think it's starting to manifest itself in a different way. Although I also know it's hereditary (Erik had asthma, Cheryl had eczema). Maybe the milk allergy is hereditary?

You might also want to think about taking Finn to a pediatric chiropractor. It can't hurt.
Uggh.
I'm sorry. What a terrible few days. I wish I knew lots about medicine so I could tell you all the answers.
All I can say is that I am here for you if you need me.
Feel better soon, Finn!

Forgot to tell you about the chiro...Maya went a few times and it really seemed to help with the drainage in her ears. Good thought Jenny! :-)
Ugh...I'm sorry for Finn, you and Erik! I wish I had suggestions. So nerve-wracking and frustrating.
Thanks everyone!
Chiro: Yes, totally agree. I even emailed Jill today asking her to ask Cale. I do have a couple friends who take their kids in to chiros nearby.
Yikes! Craziness. Hope you guys find something that works well for him.
I hope Finn is doing better today! Give a call in the evening or stop by anytime if you want to chat w/ Cale about Chiro.
Try Dr. Sharae Mautousek at Real Health Chiro in Eden Prairie. She see's lots of kids and prego moms. She has a great bedside manner.

She takes insurance..has three kids of her own. She only charges like $30 for no insurance. She helped clear up Lily's ear infections. She also fixed Lily's sprained leg when she was really, really little. She is very kid friendly.
Peter saw her when he was 2 days old.
that sounds awful.
There's been a good amount of research about some forms of asthma being caused by an intolerance to dairy. I hope eliminating it helps. It's hard feeding a child while avoiding dairy...good luck!
Also, if you'd like to have the name/number of a great allergist who also specializes in asthma, let me know. We love ours.
